Best WordPress Forum Plugins in 2026

Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 4 min read

Discussion boards, topics and replies hosted inside WordPress.

A forum plugin adds threaded discussion to WordPress: boards, topics, replies and moderation. It is a community product rather than a content one, and the hard part arrives after launch rather than during setup.

Together these 10 plugins run on more than 148,600 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "forum", its tag listing and its search results.

What changed in the Forum Plugins ranking

How to choose a Forum Plugin for WordPress

  1. 1

    Moderation is the real cost

A forum needs people, not features. Bulk moderation, reporting and the ability to lock a thread quickly matter more than styling.

  2. 2

    Spam arrives immediately

Open registration plus an open posting form is the most attractive target on a WordPress site. Plan approval and filtering before opening.

  3. 3

    Watch the database growth

Topics, replies and subscriptions accumulate quickly. Check how the plugin indexes them and whether search stays usable.

  4. 4

An empty forum looks worse than none

Discussion needs a critical mass. Seeding it and having someone answer daily for the first months is part of the plan.

How we rank Forum Plugins

WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "forum" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "forum" and "forums", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

Forum Plugins FAQ

What is the best Forum Plugin for WordPress?

On WordPress.org's own ranking for "forum", wpForo Forum is #1 as of October 22, 2026, with 20,000+ active installs and a 4.7 out of 5 rating. By active installs, bbPress leads with 100,000+. By rating, Simple Ajax Chat scores 4.9 out of 5 from 215 reviews.

Which Forum Plugin has the most active installs?

bbPress, with 100,000+ active installs reported by WordPress.org as of October 22, 2026. It ranks #2 in this list.

Which Forum Plugin has the highest rating?

Simple Ajax Chat, rated 4.9 out of 5 by 215 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.

Which Forum Plugin was updated most recently?

FluentCommunity shipped its latest release on October 16, 2026. 8 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.

How many Forum Plugins are there on WordPress.org?

WordPress.org lists 123 plugins tagged "forum" and "forums" as of October 22, 2026. This page shows the top 10 in the directory's own order.

Should a forum run in WordPress or on a separate platform?

In WordPress when the accounts should be shared with the rest of the site, when the volume is modest, and when running one more system is not realistic. On a dedicated platform when you expect real traffic, because purpose-built forum software handles search, notifications and moderation at scale far better than a plugin over a blog database.

How do I keep spam out of a WordPress forum?

Require email confirmation on registration, hold the first post from each new member for approval, and run a spam filter over topics and replies as well as comments. Most forum spam comes from accounts registered days earlier, so account moderation catches more than any check on the posting form.

Forum Plugins: the bottom line
