Best WordPress Accessibility Plugins in 2026
Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 5 min read
Contrast, keyboard navigation and screen reader fixes, plus accessibility audits.
Accessibility plugins fall into two camps. Some scan your pages and report what fails, leaving the fixing to you. Others add a toolbar that lets a visitor change contrast or text size. Only the first kind addresses the underlying markup.
Together these 10 plugins run on more than 785,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "accessibility", its tag listing and its search results.

How to choose a Accessibility Plugin for WordPress
-
1
A toolbar is not a fix
Letting a visitor enlarge text does not repair a missing label or an unreachable menu. Audit tools tell you what is actually broken.
-
2
Be careful with automatic overlays
Widgets that promise instant compliance are contested by accessibility practitioners and have been the subject of legal complaints. Read before installing one.
-
3
Most problems are in the theme
Colour contrast, heading order, focus outlines and alt text live in your content and template. A plugin can find them; someone still has to change them.
-
4
Test with a keyboard, then a screen reader
Tab through the site without touching the mouse. That five minute test finds more than most scanners.

How we rank Accessibility Plugins
WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "accessibility" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "accessibility", "wcag", "a11y" and "ada", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.
Accessibility Plugins FAQ
What is the best Accessibility Plugin for WordPress?
On WordPress.org's own ranking for "accessibility", Web Accessibility is #1 as of October 23, 2026, with 500,000+ active installs and a 2.9 out of 5 rating. By rating, Accessibility Widget by OneTap scores 4.9 out of 5 from 80 reviews.
Which Accessibility Plugin has the most active installs?
Web Accessibility, with 500,000+ active installs reported by WordPress.org as of October 23, 2026. It ranks #1 in this list.
Which Accessibility Plugin has the highest rating?
Accessibility Widget by OneTap, rated 4.9 out of 5 by 80 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.
Which Accessibility Plugin was updated most recently?
Alt Text AI shipped its latest release on October 22, 2026. 9 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.
How many Accessibility Plugins are there on WordPress.org?
WordPress.org lists 699 plugins tagged "accessibility", "wcag", "a11y" and "ada" as of October 23, 2026. This page shows the top 10 in the directory's own order.
Are these Accessibility Plugins free?
All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 1 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker.
Can an Accessibility Plugin make my site compliant?
No plugin can do that on its own. Scanners find missing alt text, poor contrast and broken heading order, which is genuinely useful, but the fixes live in your content and theme. Overlay widgets that claim instant compliance are disputed by accessibility experts and have not prevented legal complaints.
What should I fix first for accessibility?
Four things carry most of the weight: alt text on images that convey meaning, colour contrast that passes the standard, headings in real order rather than chosen for size, and a site that can be operated with the keyboard alone. An audit plugin will list all four against your actual pages.
Accessibility Plugins: the bottom line
