Best WordPress Caching Plugins in 2026
Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 5 min read
Page caching, minification and browser rules that cut load time without touching the theme.
A caching plugin saves the finished HTML of a page so WordPress does not rebuild it on every visit. That single change is usually the largest speed gain a site can make, and most of these plugins bundle minification, browser cache headers and lazy loading alongside it.
Together these 10 plugins run on more than 12,470,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "cache", its tag listing and its search results.

How to choose a Caching Plugin for WordPress
-
1
Check what your host already does
Managed hosts often run server-level caching and forbid plugin caching. Running both is the most common cause of pages that will not update.
-
2
Page cache first, the rest after
Page caching does most of the work. Minification and combining files are where sites break, so turn them on one at a time and look at the result.
-
3
Watch the pages that must stay fresh
Carts, checkouts, account pages and logged-in views have to bypass the cache. Check the plugin excludes them out of the box.
-
4
Measure before and after
Run the same page through a speed test before you install and after you tune. A plugin that scores well on its own homepage proves nothing about yours.

How we rank Caching Plugins
WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "cache" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "cache", "caching", "object-cache" and "page-cache", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

Are these Caching Plugins free?
All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 1 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Redis Object Cache.
Do I still need a Caching Plugin if my host has caching?
Usually not for page caching, and running both can serve stale pages. What a plugin still adds on a cached host is minification, browser cache headers, lazy loading and database cleanup. Check your host's documentation first; several of them block caching plugins outright.
Why does my site show old content after I edit it?
The cache is serving the copy it made before your edit. Every one of these plugins can clear the cache for a single page or the whole site, and most clear it automatically when a post is saved. If it keeps happening, something else is caching too: the host, a CDN or the browser.
