Best WordPress Download Manager Plugins in 2026
Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 5 min read
Protected file downloads with counters, access rules and version history.
A download manager sits between a file and the person taking it: it counts, restricts, versions and logs. The essential part is that the file itself is not reachable by guessing a URL, which is where the simple approaches fail.
Together these 10 plugins run on more than 299,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "download", its tag listing and its search results.

How to choose a Download Manager Plugin for WordPress
-
1
Files must not sit in the open uploads folder
If a direct link works for anyone who has it, no access rule above it means anything. Check the plugin serves files through a handler.
-
2
Decide who may download
Public, logged in, a specific role, or after a purchase. That rule is the reason to use one of these at all.
-
3
Versioning saves support time
Replacing a file while keeping the same URL, with a history behind it, is worth more than any download counter.
-
4
Large files need care
Serving a big file through PHP can exhaust memory or time out. Check for chunked delivery or a redirect to protected storage.

How we rank Download Manager Plugins
WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "download" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "download", "downloads", "download-manager" and "file-download", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

Download Monitor, rated 4.5 out of 5 by 525 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.

Shared Files shipped its latest release on October 21, 2026. 8 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.
How many Download Manager Plugins are there on WordPress.org?
WordPress.org lists 242 plugins tagged "download", "downloads", "download-manager" and "file-download" as of October 23, 2026. This page shows the top 10 in the directory's own order.
Are these Download Manager Plugins free?
All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 3 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Download Manager, Download Monitor, Download Plugins and Themes in ZIP from Dashboard.
How do I stop people sharing a download link?
Serve the file through the plugin rather than from the uploads folder, so the URL is a route that checks permission instead of a path to a file. Expiring links and per-user tokens go further. What does not work is an obscure filename: anything reachable by URL will eventually be shared.
Can WordPress serve large files reliably?
Up to a point. Pushing a file through PHP uses memory and can hit the execution time limit, which is why big downloads fail halfway on shared hosting. Plugins that stream in chunks handle it better, and for very large files the right answer is protected storage elsewhere with the plugin issuing a signed link.
