Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 5 min read

Browsing, uploading and editing server files from inside wp-admin.

A file manager plugin puts the server filesystem in the WordPress admin: browse folders, upload, edit a file, fix permissions, all without FTP. It is genuinely useful and it is one of the most dangerous things you can install.

Together these 10 plugins run on more than 1,870,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "file-manager", its tag listing and its search results.

What changed in the File Manager Plugins ranking

How to choose a File Manager Plugin for WordPress

  1. 1

Treat it as a temporary tool

These plugins have a long history of vulnerabilities that hand an attacker the whole server. Install for the job, remove afterwards.

  2. 2

    Restrict it to one administrator

If the plugin allows role restrictions and a locked root folder, use both. There is no reason for an editor to reach wp-config.

  3. 3

Prefer host tools when they exist

A host file manager or SFTP sits outside WordPress, so a compromised site does not carry the filesystem with it.

  4. 4

    Check it is actively maintained

This is the last category in which to install something last updated two years ago.

How we rank File Manager Plugins

WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "file-manager" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "file-manager", "wp-file-manager" and "file-management", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

File Manager Plugins FAQ

What is the best File Manager Plugin for WordPress?

On WordPress.org's own ranking for "file-manager", File Manager is #1 as of October 23, 2026, with 1 million+ active installs and a 4.6 out of 5 rating. By rating, Filester scores 4.9 out of 5 from 155 reviews.

Which File Manager Plugin has the most active installs?

File Manager, with 1 million+ active installs reported by WordPress.org as of October 23, 2026. It ranks #1 in this list.

Which File Manager Plugin has the highest rating?

Filester, rated 4.9 out of 5 by 155 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.

Which File Manager Plugin was updated most recently?

Media Library Organizer shipped its latest release on October 22, 2026. 10 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.

How many File Manager Plugins are there on WordPress.org?

WordPress.org lists 77 plugins tagged "file-manager", "wp-file-manager" and "file-management" as of October 23, 2026. This page shows the top 10 in the directory's own order.

Are these File Manager Plugins free?

All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 2 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Advanced File Manager, Download Manager.

Are File Manager Plugins safe to keep installed?

They are the wrong plugin to leave running. Several of the popular ones have shipped vulnerabilities that let an unauthenticated attacker read or write any file on the server, which is as complete a compromise as WordPress offers. Install one for the task, then deactivate and delete it.

Is FTP better than a File Manager Plugin?

For safety, yes. SFTP or a host control panel sits outside WordPress, so a compromised site does not hand over the filesystem with it, and the credentials are not in the database. A plugin wins only on convenience when you have no other access, which is exactly when to remove it afterwards.

File Manager Plugins: the bottom line
