Best WordPress Automation Plugins in 2026
Data from WordPress.org Updated First published 5 min read
Trigger and action rules that connect WordPress plugins to each other and outside services.
An automation plugin watches for something happening in WordPress and does something else in response: a form submitted, an order paid, a user registered. It is the glue between plugins that were never designed to know about each other.
Together these 10 plugins run on more than 399,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "automation", its tag listing and its search results.

How to choose a Automation Plugin for WordPress
-
1
List the triggers you actually need
These plugins advertise hundreds of integrations. What matters is whether the three you need are supported and how well.
-
2
Compare it against a hosted service
External automation services do the same job without touching your server. Running it inside WordPress keeps the data local and adds load.
-
3
Ask how failures are handled
An automation that silently stops is worse than none. Look for a log, retries and a notification when a step fails.
-
4
Beware of loops
A rule that creates a post which triggers the rule again will fill a database quickly. Check for loop protection.

How we rank Automation Plugins
WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "automation" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "automation", "workflow" and "workflows", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

Which Automation Plugin has the highest rating?
Bit integrations, rated 4.9 out of 5 by 160 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.
Which Automation Plugin was updated most recently?
Bit integrations shipped its latest release on September 6, 2026. 9 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.
How many Automation Plugins are there on WordPress.org?

Are these Automation Plugins free?
All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 1 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Bit integrations.
Should automation run in WordPress or in a hosted service?
In WordPress when the data should not leave your server, when you need deep access to plugin internals, or when you would rather not pay per task. In a hosted service when the work is heavy, when it must run whether or not your site is up, or when you are connecting two outside systems that barely involve WordPress.
Why did my automation stop running?
Most often WordPress cron. It only fires when someone visits the site, so a quiet site delays or skips scheduled steps, and caching plugins can suppress it further. Replacing it with a real server cron job fixes the majority of these cases. The next most common cause is an expired token on an outside service.
