Site-wide banners, admin alerts and browser push messages.
Notification plugins cover three unrelated things: a bar across the top of the site, alerts for people inside the admin, and push messages to a browser after someone subscribes. Decide which one you mean before comparing.
Together these 10 plugins run on more than 382,000 active WordPress sites. Ranked from both WordPress.org orderings for "notification", its tag listing and its search results.

How to choose a Notification Plugin for WordPress
-
1
A bar is gentler than a popup
For an announcement, a sticky bar interrupts far less and is not treated as an intrusive interstitial on mobile.
-
2
Push needs a service behind it
Browser push messages go through a provider, and the free tiers usually cap subscribers. Know that ceiling before building a list.
-
3
Give people a way to dismiss it
A banner that reappears on every page is an irritation. Check the dismissal is remembered.
-
4
Admin notices need control too
Plugins that tidy the admin notice pile are a genuinely different product from the visitor-facing ones. Do not mix them up.

How we rank Notification Plugins
WordPress.org publishes two orderings for "notification" and neither is reliable alone. The tag listing covers every tag the directory files these plugins under, "notification", "notifications" and "notification-bar", and is sorted by active installs, which lets a large plugin carrying one of them loosely sit above the ones the category is about. Its search results are sorted by relevance and carry their own noise. So a plugin is placed here by where it sits across both lists: high in each one lifts it, high in only one does not. We fetch both every day at 03:00 UTC, keep every day's snapshot, and add nothing of our own. No plugin is inserted, removed or sponsored, and each entry shows its position in both lists on its own page. Full methodology.

On WordPress.org's own ranking for "notification", Manage Notification E-mails is #1 as of October 12, 2026, with 100,000+ active installs and a 4.8 out of 5 rating. By rating, My Sticky Bar scores 4.9 out of 5 from 1,198 reviews.
Which Notification Plugin has the most active installs?

Which Notification Plugin has the highest rating?
My Sticky Bar, rated 4.9 out of 5 by 1,198 reviewers on WordPress.org. Only plugins with at least 50 reviews are counted, so a single 5-star review does not win.
Which Notification Plugin was updated most recently?
Manage Notification E-mails shipped its latest release on October 8, 2026. 8 of the 10 plugins in this list were updated in the last 90 days, which is the usual sign of active maintenance.
How many Notification Plugins are there on WordPress.org?
WordPress.org lists 735 plugins tagged "notification", "notifications" and "notification-bar" as of October 12, 2026. This page shows the top 10 in the directory's own order.
Are these Notification Plugins free?
All 10 are free to install from WordPress.org. 4 of them are listed as commercial, meaning the developer sells a paid version or add-ons: Notification, Customize WordPress Emails and Alerts, NotificationX and others.
Is a notification bar better than a popup?
For announcements, yes. It stays out of the content, so it does not trigger the intrusive interstitial rules on mobile, and readers tolerate it far longer. A popup converts better for a single strong offer. Sites that use both usually reserve the popup for one campaign and leave the bar for standing information.
Do browser push notifications need a paid service?
Beyond a few thousand subscribers, usually. Push messages are delivered through a provider rather than your server, and the free tiers cap the list or the number of sends. Self-hosted plugins exist and shift the work to your own server, which becomes its own cost as the list grows.
